One thing is for sure, advances in communication technology is not always a good thing.

Pat Tilletthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17699973774273291205noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7274757246538504796.post-13305619368810922542013-03-02T18:04:11.096-08:002013-03-02T18:04:11.096-08:00Despite my use of the computer for writing, submit...Despite my use of the computer for writing, submitting pieces to editors, and blogging, I try to ignore most modern communications devices. I have assiduously avoided owning a cell phone, for instance. I have no desire to carry around a device that will interrupt me while I'm doing something else. Maybe I'll have to break down and buy one, someday, but thus far I have survived and thrived without it.Suldoghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07778845367184916684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7274757246538504796.post-62210199160670250022013-02-27T17:17:43.276-08:002013-02-27T17:17:43.276-08:00My last position, heading a news organization prov...My last position, heading a news organization providing content across several platforms and stations, meant a true 24/7 connection. Typically I was on the phone or online with overnight staff at Midnight, up watching product at 5AM and then communicating with departing and arriving staff before our first news budget meeting, in person at 9A. Rarely left before 7PM and the day was a series of meetings, phone conferences, emails and being truly wired into the grid.

It all made me long for an earlier job, when I'd be off in the bush in Africa, South and Central America, Caribbean Islands or extreme locations in the US working on long form projects and would be out of touch for days. There were times my only contact with the world was a short wave listening to the BBC World Service. A full day of video shooting, a meal and a few drinks, retiring to the tent or lodge with my shortwave connection=bliss!Tom Cochrunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04046822056852446079noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7274757246538504796.post-16370183566711748442013-02-27T15:08:29.125-08:002013-02-27T15:08:29.125-08:00There have been numerous studies that in fact show...There have been numerous studies that in fact show productivity goes way up when people do take time off and recharge. It's common in many parts of the world, and business chugs right along. Look at Greece...er...I mean Italy...umm...no, make that Spain...ahhh. I'm sure there's a happy medium out there somewhere. ;)

SLowandslowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08608734222483888884noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7274757246538504796.post-46456956247559938732013-02-27T09:24:13.932-08:002013-02-27T09:24:13.932-08:00I love the way you closed this...by saying that yo...I love the way you closed this...by saying that you secretly hope they have fun :)Optimistic Existentialisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11507986337866049924noreply@blogger.com
